Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs) 01:20, 16 July 2023‎ (UTC)Reply[reply]

    AbchyZa22 (talk) 23:06, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That depends on how ancient or antique the depicted items are. Our standard with {{PD-old-assumed}} is at least 120 years. Our standard with {{PD-Venezuela}} is 60 years past publication for "an audiovisual work, a photograph, a broadcast work or a computer program" and 60 years past death of the author for other works per the “Venezuelan Law on Copyright of August 14th, 1993, Art. 25, 26 and 38” (details).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:06, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image accessibility[edit]

There's an image - File:Sygreversed.png - that has poor accessibility due to use of white on a white background. The original uploader appears to no longer be on Wikimedia. Is there any type of template or tag I could add to the page or other way of alerting other editors to this page that the image needs editing/adjusting/altering for accessibility so as many people as possible can properly read and view the it? Using Government Logos UK[edit]

Hi, I want to upload the logo of a government organisation (Government People Group, a group within the cabinet office) to wikimedia commons. The logo is under Crown Copyright (as all UK images are) but as it is an identifying media for a public facing and government organisation I think it may fall under fair use should the image not be distorted or misrepresented.

Please advise on what you think if you are knoweledgable on this. Thanks GPG Communications (talk) 10:58, 4 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How old is this logo? Ruslik (talk) 20:18, 4 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Changing the operator for a WikiCommons collection of pics.[edit]

Hi there, we need to update some of the pictures that were uploaded many years ago. The original operator has left us and the project has ended. The images are all now out of date and we'd like to delete them to ensure no out of date pics are used by others.

Can you help please?

Thanks

P. Pgthorne01 (talk) 13:54, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You may need to know a little bit about Wikipedia, Commons and free licenses. When you uploaded the pictures a few years ago, you gave it a free license. This license cannot be revoked. Trying to do that would be considered vandalism. As the pictures are online for a few years now, they are probably within the SCOPE of this project and can be used forever by everyone for everything (within the limits of the law). You can however upload new pictures and you can also ask at the individual Wiki projects to use the new one's instead of the old one's. If there is a good reason, this may be done. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 14:01, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I still need to remove access from an old colleague who's now left the organisation. How do we do that? Pgthorne01 (talk) 14:26, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Pgthorne01: Which account? Which access are you talking about? If you would provide more information, it may help understanding the situation. Yann (talk) 15:32, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright help regarding File:Tsumyoki1.jpg[edit]

Hi I want to know if the file I uploaded is fine to be used as for the artists image as he has requested to change it himself and I've used a photo which is freely available. Please let me know if its valid and can be used. Thanks !

Regards, Vernon.

--Vernonsqr (talk) 17:41, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, this is not OK. You need the formal written permission from the author for a free license. If you have such a permission, please ask the copyright holder to send it via COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:10, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why was the New York State Excelsior License Plate.jpg deleted?[edit]

I noticed the page for Vehicle registration plates of New York has a very low resolution picture for the most recent license plate. I figured it would be better to replace it with the high quality one from https://dmv.ny.gov/plates/excelsior-plates. Upon trying to upload that picture, it said that the image already existed and was deleted in the past. Is there any reason for this? It's a government image so does that count as free license? Alexanderhyperbeam (talk) 18:14, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The State of New York doesn't release government works to the public domain like the U.S. federal government does. Abzeronow (talk) 18:24, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

local public memorial[edit]

Can I upload a photograph of a memorial in a public park if there is a sculpture in it? The sculpture was added in 1992. It is outdoors in the US and on permanent display. It is a local memorial, not connected to the federal government. Neville2023 (talk) 19:19, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Neville2023: , we'd need permission from the sculptor to host that here since it's from after 1989, in which works are automatically copyrighted, and unfortunately, there isn't FoP in the US for artwork. Abzeronow (talk) 19:46, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I cannot upload 2nd version of a file[edit]

Hi.

I translated into Polish a file about mechanisms of self-harm (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mechanizmy_samookaleczania_(PL).png). Right now I realized authors are kinda different that I thought and I wanted to credit them in this file. When I try to upload 2nd version of file, with better credits, I still get the old version shown (the one that credits only Bkell - there should be 2 additional users). I dunno what is wrong - can somebody help me, please?

Best wishes

Okay people, I see that the version I wanted to be is there and apparently - it shows the right thing. Still it is a mystery for me why oryginally the second version was not showing any changes. Maybe I should just have waited?
Or maybe it's some kinda "saved" picture in my browser...? And this is why it was shown as it was shown...?
Okay, anyway, thank you for the help, I will take care of things from here. Sorry for the commotion.

Unhelpful algorithm for constructing the Descriptions displayed on Uploads pages[edit]

When I look at the photos I've uploaded (at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Misha_Wolf&ilshowall=1), the content of the table cells under the heading "Description" makes no sense. Text from fields I have supplied has been concatenated, with some other words thrown in, resulting in a strange word salad. Would it be possible to change the algorithm so that it produces helpful text? Many thanks. :) Misha Wolf (talk) 23:44, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • The text in Special:ListFiles is a pretty naive dump. Basically, that page exists to give you visual access to your uploaded images, and also gives you a certain number of characters worth of the text you provided. It has no notion of formatting, no way to parse Wikitext, etc. I personally can't imagine investing into it: it's not really considered a "public-facing" page, it's an internal maintenance page provided for our convenience as editors. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Misha Wolf: The template works pretty well if you provide a noun phrase like a URL as the source of the file: "Uploaded a work by SBS Radio from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCjGfQJ4kw with UploadWizard" to take a recent example from my own upload history. Because you've provided a sentence instead, you've got something uglier. If you could come up with a template that would work for both, it might be possible to get it changed. I managed to do that for cross-wiki uploads a year or two ago. I can't currently work out where this setting would be changed, so that might be your second challenge. --bjh21 (talk) 13:10, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Trying to upload an image for a videogame[edit]

Hi, this is my first time editing on wikipedia/media. I'm trying to upload the promotional art for a videogame article, whichi believe to be acceptable as other articles use simialr images. however, when uploading, i wasnt sure how to deal with the copyright. after uploading i have gotten a message saying the copyright information was insufficient and the file may be deleted within 7 days. how do i make it so this file is acceptable on wikimedia, like other videogame promotional artworks are? Remix Fantastica (talk) 10:02, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Remix Fantastica: such images are copyrighted and require permission from the holder of the copyright. You say "other articles use simialr [sic] images." Commons doesn't have articles. Can you point at what you would consider a similar image on Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
i meant other articles on wikipedia, sorry. i presumed the images used on wikipedia articles are hosted on wikimedia. this would be an example of an article tht uses a similar image as the one im trying to upload Remix Fantastica (talk) 22:57, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Heroes forgot to put the link Remix Fantastica (talk) 22:58, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Images for wikipedia are hosted on commons with the exception of "fair use" images that are only allowed on projects that have a fair use rationale (like en.wikipedia.org). If you need help for fair use images you need to ask at the project, that has the applicable fair use raitonale. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 00:15, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Remix Fantastica: the only image in the Sonic Heroes article that comes from Commons is File:Yuji Naka' - Magic - Monaco - 2015-03-21- P1030036 (cropped).jpg, which I presume you will agree is in no way comparable. They two that might be considered comparable are both hosted on en-wiki itself, with stated rationales for the non-free use. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Problem with logging in (never seen that one yet)[edit]

I am Paradise Chronicle and when I try to login on commons I get the following message repeatedly:

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form.

There is no-one hijacking my account, at least not myself. I have tried to login from my cell phone as well as with my laptop and I got the same message. I have another account User451819913 with which I also edit sometimes in commons, mainly because with my Paradise Chronicle account I either can't use the Image Annotator and if, then only with a workaround; its all explained at both user pages of commons. The shifting between the two accounts worked fine until today. I have access to my Paradise Chronicle account in the different Wikipedia projects except for Commons and Meta and I also get the notifications in the other projects from Commons and Meta there. Also the Wikimedia email account works. Could someone help me with logging in? 212.51.132.55 17:58, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What can cause a PNG to look different to its SVG?[edit]

I'm having a big of trouble understanding why this flag image has a different png from svg. Here you see the png has no coat of arms. Open this image's Commons page and then click on the image again, which will show the svg. Why does it look different to the png?

Information fields required when loading a cropped image (original one made by a different author)[edit]

I would like to upload a cropped and straightened version of an existing image (not mine), and in this special case I have a few doubts about how to correctly fill-in the following Information parameters :

1) date: Is it referred to the original image or to the modified one? 2) source: Is it me (the current user) or is it the source of the original image that has been modified? 3) author: Is it the current user who has modified the original image, or is it the author of the original image? 4) other versions: Is it best to use 'Extracted from' or 'Derivative versions'?

Many thanks and best regards Centoesettecento (talk) 12:44, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Centoesettecento: I assume you are talking about uploading a new version under a distinct filename, not overwriting with a cropped version. I strongly recommend that you do the crop with the CropTool, which will do this all correctly, but if you are going to do it manually:
1) date should be the date the photo was taken, so it does not change
2) source should not change
3) author normally unchanged, but you may add "cropped by" and your name.
4) other versions {{Extracted from}} is most correct, and add a reciprocal {{Image extracted}} to the original. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

media needing renaming[edit]

It would be really nice if the media needing renaming categories would autosort chronologically, and not alphabetically. Files with a name starting with "V" may never be renmamed, if new requests come in faster than renames are done. @C.Suthorn: Welcome to the help desk. I'm not understanding how you want me to help, but I'll try. By selecting "move", then entering the new name, and providing a reason, you can ask to have the files renamed. Best, 20 upper 13:45, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:51, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Admins don't particularly take these up in alphabetical order (though I'm sure a few do). This isn't a task I particularly do, but when I do other tasks that are sorted alphabetically and have any time-sensitivity, I usually take them in a pseudo-random order. I suspect others do the same. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Agressive behaviour - random deletion[edit]

Guidance on how to cite sources is at English Wikipedia w:Wikipedia:Citing sources. As for uploading .pdfs of magazines, the magazine content would either need to be in the public domain or explicitly under a free license such as Creative Commons-Attribution. Most magazines are not, so I'd be cautious there. Abzeronow (talk) 17:44, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Typically a logo like this, unless it is very simple or very old (e.g. a century or so), is copyrighted, so Commons could host it only if the owner of that copyright granted a free license, which is very unlikely. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to get a redirected page's categories (using the API)?[edit]

Using Wikimedia's API, I can get the categories for an article, unless that article redirects to a different article. For example. this article https://stardewvalleywiki.com/10,000_Bundle (which is using the Wikimedia API and isn't different than normal wikipedia) redirects to this: https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Bundles#g10000_Bundle . How do I get the categories of the second article? Because the first one is a redirect page, it does not have a category. 3point1415 (talk) 22:33, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I received the following message on my Discussion page : "A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Carte prévisionnelle du Service express métropolitain de Rouen.webp, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". [...]".

The original work is here : File:Carte prévisionnelle du Service express métropolitain de Rouen.svg. It is mine. I just had to upload it in webp because the Wikimedia's SVG reader seems to work badly with text boundaries in SVG.

How to search for "good" pictures within a category and all its subcategories?[edit]

Hello,

I am looking for a better lead pic for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agriculture_in_Turkey

Is there a way to search for the "good" pictures in "Category:Agriculture_in_Turkey" and all its subcategories please?

And is there a way to search for the "featured" pictures in "Category:Agriculture_in_Turkey" and all its subcategories please? Chidgk1 (talk) 13:08, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Chidgk1, yes there is sort of. Category:Agriculture in Turkey there you just hit the good pictures button on the top above the tool bar. Then there opens a top down selection of the best images. You have also the option to improve your search in another top down menu. Here are the good images from the category of Agriculture of Turkey. Enjoy. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 17:59, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh so does that include the subcategories? I mean are there are only 37 good images including all the subcats? Chidgk1 (talk) 05:04, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I believe so, as many of the Good images in Agriculture in Turkey are not in that category, but in a subcategory such as this one. This one is in the subcategory sheep in Turkey, which is a subcat of livestock in Turkey, which is a subcat of animal husbandry in Turkey, which is finally a subcategory of Agriculture in Turkey. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 10:00, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But that is a "quality image" not a "good image". I removed Agriculture in Turkey from File:Thay997020.jpg and the number dropped to 36 despite that pic being in Category:Fruit of Turkey which is in Category:Agricultural products of Turkey which is in Category:Agriculture in Turkey. Should I report a bug and if so where? Chidgk1 (talk) 15:19, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The help page for the gadget FastCCI says that the files in the subcategories are included. "Quality images" are included in the "good pictures", at least as defined by this gadget, as well as "featured pictures" and "valued images" (which are not necessarily good in the ordinary sense, but are suppposed good to illutrate a subject). What would be your inclusion criteria for "good images" in your question? 36 is the number of files currently in the category, not the number of "good pictures". The number of "good pictures" currently returned by the gadget is 58, including featured, quality and valued, in the category and its subcateries. You can use the option to include only one of those types of files. The gadget may not always work or it may take some time to work. If you see "connecting" near the top left of the page, it means it's trying to work but it is not showing the results yet. Of course, there are also a lot of very good images that do not have those labels. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:22, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm wondering whether or not a band's logo is simple enough not to be considered a work of authorship.[edit]

I've been creating a userbox on Wikipedia about a band called The Cat Empire. I would like to know whether or not it is simple enough not to be considered a "work of authorship", as I would like to use it in the userbox's icon. I could also create a crude scrawling of the logo if that is necessary.

Here's a copy of the logo, found online: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a0/9a/43/a09a43c3f2c7fae41e87fd36490e3856.jpg

Image created by me but based on an historic image provided by the British Library[edit]

I obtained some images of pages of a book printed in 1650 from the British Library's Imaging Service. These I edited so I could use them to create a single folio image for my own purposes. The result is therefore my own work, based on copies from a 1650 book which is obviously out of copyright. Can I submit it to Wikimedia? Can the terms of the BL Imaging Service affect this? (I can't check it just at the moment as their website is inaccessible.) Ceperman (talk) 18:15, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ceperman: if these are faithful copies at each step of the way, then as far as Commons is concerned these are simply uncreative photos of a two-dimensional work in the public domain, and may be uploaded as such ({{PD-old-100}} or similar tag). Neither you nor the British Library has any copyright involved here.
Note that UK law may view this differently: there is a so-called "sweat-of-brow" doctrine in UK copyright law if it took a lot of work to make the clean copy. I believe (though I could be wrong, User:Clindberg might know) that it has never been tested in a courtroom. Commons pretty much ignores it. - 22:40, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Any "sweat-of-brow" here would be mine, as I cleaned up the copy, and I'm happy to give up any copyright claim. Does this make it OK just to submit it as my work? Ceperman (talk) 18:45, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As I said, Commons really doesn't recognize the "sweat of the brow" claim. Not quite "highest", but Special:MediaSearch has an "Image size" option that allows you to ask only for larger images. For more control, you can use the "file measures" feature on both Special:Search and Special:MediaSearch. For instance adding filewidth:>1920 to your query will get you files at least 1920 pixels wide. There is a way to ask for an explicit sort order, but sorting by resolution doesn't appear on the list. --bjh21 (talk) 10:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

and the issue where the contents of the image were 100000 times as tall/wide as the ostensible height and width. I'm not sure why the only shapes that display are the rectangle background and the three stars, but hopefully someone else can help with that. I'm looking forward to finding out what's going on there! Is it possible to track new subtitles added to files in a category?[edit]

Hello! The Basque Wikimedians User Group is developping the project called Ikusgela. There are a good amount of videos there, and some of them have subtitles. Now we are asking other people to add further subtitles, but we can't track if that happens. Is there a way to track new subtitles added to any file in that category? Thanks! Theklan (talk) 09:14, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, somehow it is possible using sparql and wikidata list. The code is available here: eu:Atari:Hezkuntza/Ikusgela/Azpitituluak. Thanks User:Nikki for the hard work. -Theklan (talk) 11:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adding image in black and white form[edit]

Is it possible to add an image to an article in black and white form when the original uploaded image is in colorized form, without uploading a separate black and white image for it? Lamba Chaura (talk) 10:20, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lamba Chaura: Without overwriting the original (which would be a bad idea), that's a good question. In a quick look at mw:Help:Images and en:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax, I did not find an option to display an image with a b&w filter, but you may want to have a deeper look at those help pages. Anyway, uploading a separate file would be a good solution. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:01, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yup. I'd upload a derivative work under a new filename, and use that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks @Asclepias: and @Jmabel: , I guess the only way is to upload a separate file. Was hoping that there would be a image syntax to do so. Lamba Chaura (talk) 20:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unesco 2013 traveling photo exhibit "journeys to school"[edit]

Hello,

Could you please inform me if your database has the photo images of UNESCO 2013 publication, "Journeys to school" and how do I obtain them?

Thanks, Weiming Gorman Wdyao (talk) 13:07, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Wdyao: I don't think those are public-domain or free-licensed. Do you have any evidence that they are? - Jmabel ! talk 16:31, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. I just found out that UNECO digital library has a copy. 74.109.196.227 16:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How long does a speedy deletion take? How can I make sure a picture is removed?[edit]

I believe I have requested a speedy deletion on a really unfortunate picture. The picture is of a friend and was uploaded a while ago. Unfortunately this picture is causing great troubles for him at work and may cost him his job. I am not experienced in editing wikimedia pages, but desperateley hope this picture can be removed as soon as possible. Any tips? Benniderprofi (talk) 16:52, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Add an image from your PC[edit]

Hi, I would like to add an image that I created personally for a Wikipedia page, but every time I try to upload it I get this message:

"We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons. The content must be freely licensed. Do not copy files illegally (in violation of copyright) from other websites. If you believe that the file meets our licensing standards: Upload the file again or click "Retry failed uploads"/"Submit modified file description"."

What can I do to solve the problem? Thanks and best regards. Il Grande Aukan (talk) 20:41, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Il Grande Aukan: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg images as a new user.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:55, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Billing[edit]

I need to talk to someone about the billing thing , please have someone 🙏 send me an email at richard.collins32@yahoo.ca 70.65.182.157 01:05, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, and welcome. What billing thing?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is nothing where Wikimedia Commons (this site) would ever have sent you (or anyone) a bill. What entity billed you? Might it be the Wikimedia Foundation? - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Were you asked to donate while browsing Wikipedia? If so, please e-mail donate@wikimedia.org for any questions. The Wikimedia Foundation is the organization that collects those donations and uses them to operate Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. However, it is separate from the community of volunteers that provides assistance here. Anon126 ( ) 06:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It has almost certainly nothing to do with this website. You're not telling billing by whom and for what. I doubt that anyone can help with something vague as "the billing thing". Also, posting your e-mail is a good way to receive unwanted stuff, including possibly fake bills. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:32, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adding a PDF to an article.[edit]

What is the process of adding a PDF to an article as verification. In this example, I'm referring to a degree received. Thank you. VictorEdgar (talk) 02:20, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You could upload a scan, screenshot or photograph of the degree. You can follow the instruction given at the Upload Wizard. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 03:08, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@VictorEdgar: but more to the point, assuming you are talking about a Wikipedia article, there is normally no need to upload a PDF anywhere to cite its contents. If the PDF in question is already online somewhere, cite the copy already online. If it is not, then it is presumably a scan of a printed source, which may be cited. Citations to not need to be even to materials that are on line, only to materials that are, at least in principle, available to be viewed by another person. E.g. look at the citations and references for Abraham Goldfaden. - Jmabel ! talk

Contrast enhanced ISS images[edit]

Am I doing this right? Does this look OK? I have another 16 of these ready to upload. I downloaded the digital negatives from NASA and adjusted them in darktable. The bottom right corner ends up a bit dark, because I'm subtracting the haze uniformly across the whole image, which exaggerates a slight vignetting in the source image.

original my image

Tim Starling (talk) 11:41, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Tim Starling: You are doing fine. I wouldn't worry about your image not being in all ways better, that's exactly why we don't overwrite. Offhand the only things I'd do differently are:
  1. be overt about the retouching, something like "white-balancing by Tim Starling".
  2. assuming it is your intent to release the white-balancing into the public domain, be overt about releasing your enhancement with a {{CC-0}} tag or other similar means of waiving rights.
  3. Use {{Derivative versions}} on the original file page to link to your retouched version. - Jmabel ! talk 20:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks Jmabel. I used {{Retouched}} to describe the modifications, and {{PD-retouched-user}} for the license. -- Tim Starling (talk) 22:17, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That'll do. - Jmabel ! talk 22:58, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Updating/replacing a deletion request with no permission template?[edit]

I have nominated File:Mohd_Sany_Hamzan_sedang_berswafoto.jpg for deletion here. I am aware that missing EXIF data is not sole grounds for deletion and apologise for that. However, it is highly likely that this is not the uploader's own work as claimed on the page because it is a selfie of the subject. Should I remove the nomination request and replace it with {{subst:npd}}? HejTuWou (talk) 02:51, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
