First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

w:Template:PD-Old regime Iraq has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 14:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OTRS[edit]

When you upload a flickr image, please tag it with {{Flickrreview}}. (If you use Special:Upload and select one of the "flickr" licensing options from the drop box, it will automatically be added for you.) Adding that tag places it in a category for a bot or a trusted human to check the image against the source license on flickr to confirm that the license is valid. This review process is sufficient for the image to be accepted - nothing needs to be sent to OTRS. Because the flickr page itself specifies the license, no further information is needed. But if the image comes from some other third party website, ie, this image of Dr. Falwell that I got from Liberty University, there needs to be evidence beyond my say so on file that it has actually been licensed under the GFDL. The same is the case with some of the Tech massacre photos. For example, this photo was all over the news media and the OTRS submission from the author contains a statement that he is the photographer and that he releases the image under the GFDL. --BigDT 22:43, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Actually, I misread part of what you said ... when you upload a photo from flickr that you, personally authored, it isn't necessary to add {{Flickrreview}}. It's best, though, to say in the "source" field something like, "I took this photo, in addition to uploading it here, I also uploaded it to flickr at http://whatever". That way, there is no confusion. --BigDT 22:49, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Grouping deletion requests[edit]

Please make a single DR when there's more than two or three things for which the same rationale applies. Grouping things makes everyone's job easier - comment in one place for those participating, and only one request to deal with for admins. For the future :) – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sorry, can do. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 04:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please do a mass DR when nominating many images by the same user for the same reason. This makes everyone's job easier.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:19, 10 October 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Fourthords!
Tip: Add categories to your images
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Just letting you know I am contesting the speedy deletion request on this image as I think it merits discussion first and there is a larger issue involved. Your input is welcome. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:38, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, i see now that you have just nominated a great many license plate images for speedy deletion, so you are already aware of the larger issues involved. I don't think speedy deletion is the right way to deal with this, a discussion should be had on wether or not such designs, as a category, should be permitted here, instead of leaving it to the discretion of a single administrator. They're right, there's no need to license that image (pay the state) to use it due to fair-use considerations. What we need to know is whether it's acceptable for us to host this image and allow others to (1) modify, (2) re-distribute, and (3) profit from this image in every way (see COM:L). Provided the state of North Carolina finds these terms acceptable for their design of that license plate, we may host it here at the Commons. — Fourthords | =/\= | 05:35, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The quote is "there is no need to license a plate picture in order to use that image". Not "there's no need to license that image (pay the state) to use it due to fair-use considerations". Two very different statements. The first is from the NC Attorney General's Office, which is the final arbiter here, and clearly is intended as a blanket statement. Who else do you think is going to raise a stink? - Richfife (talk) 07:11, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mislabelled image[edit]

Please refer to File:USS Commodore Perry (1864).jpg It would appear that archives.gov mislabelled this image of the US Morse as being of the USS Commodore Perry (1864). Are you happy to relabel it or delete it? I think it should be relabelled, as its a unique image in as much as it was severely cropped from the original. Stop press: Look at this https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/268275https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/268275 ???? Broichmore (talk) 19:40, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Source for the Morse was the MOLLUS-Mass Civil War Photograph Collection Volume 64. See http://cdm16635.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/compoundobject/collection/p16635coll12/id/12649/show/12641/rec/4
It was attributed to be the Morse on the card the images were mounted on.
I have put all of the (18) images in their own folder. Category:Gun boat on the Pamunkey River, Va
Question, how does the MET know better. Looks like I will have to write to them, or do you know?
Also do you know for sure it is the Perry? The side view we have of the Perry is also attributed twice to the Barney. See Category:USS Commodore Barney (ship, 1859). Our picture of the Perry doesn't have round pilothouses and more worrying the funnel is different. Appreciate you opinion on that? See en:Talk:USS Commodore Perry for detailed descriptions of the boats.
Lastly are there any images of the Morse anywhere? Broichmore (talk) 12:38, 9 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"Source for the Morse was…" So then, how reliable is the Massachusetts Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States?
"Question, how does the MET know better." The museum cites "Loyal Legion, Boston Chapter, Commandery of the State of Massachusetts", for what that's worth. I would generally assume that such an institution, with a century-and-a-half of opportunity to vet their sources, is accurate in their claims. I don't know what the Commons SOP is, though.
"Also do you know for sure it is the Perry?" I don't know anything beyond the sources from which I find media; I am not a reliable source. — fourthords | =Λ= | 15:17, 9 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll write to the MET. Meanwhile our known total for this view is now 22 images. Broichmore (talk) 17:29, 9 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:The McLain Family Band, 7 Jan 2017.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:The McLain Family Band, 7 Jan 2017.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

License plates[edit]

Hi, just saw this deletion request and I am not quite sure how to interpret it. Wouldn't this mean that everything in Category:License plates of Connecticut and all other license plates should be deleted? I have been told somewhere that a license plate with no particular design is not a copyright infringement. I will post at the Village pump as well. mr.choppers (talk)-en- 20:13, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I cannot see the file anymore, but based on experience it's likely that Gojira91 (talk · contribs) uploaded a photo of a license plate, claimed it as their own work, and them claimed a Creative Commons license for it. Unless the plate design is stupidly rudimentary, it's likely copyrighted. If you need more info, though, you'll have to check with mattbuck (talk contribs blocks protections deletions moves rights rights changes); they're the administrator who deleted the file. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 20:55, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Andrew Card discretely telling US President George W. Bush about the September 11 attacks.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Oh, I had no input on this photo outside of cropping it from another. I think you'd be better served by finding that original photographer or uploader and asking them. Fourthords | =Λ= | 10:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
